If you want to keep your garden healthy while eliminating any chemicals in your yard, then the best thing to do is to go organic! After all, you should do your part in minimizing pollutants in the environment, which is what organic lawn care is all about. Here are interesting tips and techniques on how to have an organic garden and generate healthier crops along the way.
Enrich the Soil There are plenty of organisms in the soil that also requires the same things every creature needs – breathe, drink, eat and digest. With a healthier and richer soil, this leads to better growth of crops since only natural materials are found in it. This is the reason why organic fertilizer is a better options since it provides food and nourishment to organisms that contribute to more abundant growths. A healthy soil is the best environment for plants that eventually become easier to maintain and resistant to disease and drought. Soil Testing Some people decide to go ahead and buy fertilizer before they even know the kind of soil they have in their yard. This is a wrong move since it is important to have the soil tested first before any types of fertilizer is used. You may either purchase a soil testing kit, or send samples of your soil to a co-op in your neighborhood. This way, you can determine the amount of potassium, phosphorus, nitrogen, sulphur and lime are in your soil. Also, you will be able to identify the types of nutrients that must be added to the soil to make it richer. Excess amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen only tends to run off to rivers, lakes and other bodies of water. Too much nutrients can even kill your plants and grass, and this is one thing that you will never want to risk. So, make it a point to determine nutrients in the soil through an accurate test before you begin planting and using fertilizer. Know the pH Level Depending on where you live, the pH level of your soil may be higher or lower than what is ideal for sowing seeds. Ideally, there should be a ratio of 7:1 (calcium to magnesium) in a healthy lawn soil. Too much magnesium leads to soil compaction, which encourages weed growth. To increase calcium level in the soil, you may use a high calcium limestone, although a soil test is still very important before adding such to the ground. Proper Trimming The right height of grass is optimal to a richer and more beautiful garden. If you prefer grass that grows at a slower rate while being capable of resisting disease, then you may consider planting cultivars. These minimize the amount of time in mowing or watering the lawn. Since cultivars resist disease, there is also less need for using pesticides. Hence, you will find it easier to manage your garden and eliminate any chemicals in maintaining its health. To have an organic garden, never use any synthetic fertilizers that can only cause more damages to your soil. Food-grade materials found in pesticides, as well as natural solutions for pests are your best bet to preventing non-beneficial bugs in the soil while promoting a richer yield without causing additional problems to the environment.
